My work is a direct reflection of my Chinese-American identity, a deeply personal exploration shaped by my experiences as a Chinese adoptee growing up in Los Angeles within a multicultural household. Through ceramics and other media, my artwork is a journey of self-discovery, a means to reconnect with a culture that I was unable to fully experience in my youth. The absence of a traditional Chinese upbringing has led me to grapple with questions such as what influences our perception of others, and what aspects build our identity. My artwork represents the complexities of identity within the modern world and how culture is inherited and redefined over time.
My artistic practice is an ongoing journey aimed at understanding myself as a Chinese-American artist, while also educating myself and others about the complexities within identity and culture. Each piece is imbued with personal significance, often incorporating elements from my own life, such as key memories from my childhood while also reaching towards a culture that I have been separated from. Within my practice, I am able to manifest my exploration of cultural identity and simultaneously invite others to engage with that narrative. My work becomes a space for dialogue, inviting viewers to share in the exploration of what it means to belong to multiple identities and the intricate ways in which those identities inform our lives. Through this process, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the shared human experience. In this current climate, identity is something that is often questioned. Often hoping for a concise answer so that we can subconsciously sum up their entire beings into one that then puts people in categories that disregard all the complexities of life. Identity isn’t concise, it’s complex and everchanging. Rooted in history and family, my work serves as a way to navigate my own identity while reflecting the broader complexities of belonging and what it means to exist as human beings.
